However, they didn't really answer my question . I asked them how the Historical dolls ranked based on popularity. Here's what they said:

-------------------------------------------
Dear Emily,

Thank you for your e-mail! It sounds like you have have given this list
a lot of thought! We are so flattered that you think of us often. We
love to have enthusiastic fans such as yourself.

As far as each dolls popularity, that is difficult for us to asses. We
try not to categorize our dolls by which ones are more popular as they
are all special and unique in their own ways!

American Girl first introduced Molly, Kirsten and Samantha. They have
been with us the longest, so perhaps there are more girls that are
familiar with them.

Felicity was the first new doll after the original three doll added to
the American Girl collection in 1991.

Addy joined the American Girl collection in 1993, and was the second
girl to be introduced after the series was launched in 1986.

Josefina was added in 1997, and Kit was added in 2000.

Kaya made her appearance in 2002. Then Nellie in June, 2004.

Even though Nellie is the ninth historical girl to be added after the
collection was launched in 1986, she is really part of Samantha's
collection.

Elizabeth was added to the collection of American Girls in September
2005. Even though Elizabeth is the tenth historical girl added, she is
really a part of Felicity's collection as she is Felicity's friend. Both
Elizabeth and Felicity have received a lot of attention after their
debut in their movie, Felicity: An American Girl Adventure.

This is just a short history of the time line of our dolls. If we put
them in any type of order, we try to do it in the order of which the
dolls have been introduced.

Just like our fans, we feel they are all beautiful and have their own
special stories to tell!

Thank you for your interest in American Girls!. We hope you will
continue to enjoy our books, dolls, and educational products for many
years to come!

Warm regards,

What a well phrased way to avoid the question! That was nice of them to respond to you- the email clearly took a lot of thought, because it is well written.
